sidewalk in balmain, balmain

Hidden from the main road, in a tight alleyway is a sunny, cozy, relatively new and quiet courtyard cafe called Sidewalk in Balmain. The cafe should be next on your brunch hit list because it's perfect for a small getaway from the busy and bustling Darling Street.

Along with Sidewalk's tea lattes series (including green tea, earl grey, lady grey and black tea lattes), they also do this wonderful drink which deceptively resembles a taro latte. But don't be fooled! It tastes nothing like taro. Instead, it tastes like purple sweet potato! It's creamy and milky with just the right amount of sweetness and perfect for this cold weather.

Sweet Potato Latte ($4.00):

As you sip on your hot drinks, the suns rays seep through the gaps of the trees warming you up instantly. And in that moment, there's nothing more satisfying than that.

But not only is this place relaxing, it also does amazing food!

Smoked Alaska ($17.50):
Smoked salmon, avocado, red cabbage, caper, onion and dill cream with a poached egg on sourdough bread.

For all those eggs benedict lovers out there who want to deviate from their usual order, Sidewalk has your back. The Smoked Alaska is what your looking for! A generous serving of smashed avocado is spread on sourdough toast, topped with crunchy red cabbage, fresh smoked salmon sprinkled with capers, an oozy poached egg slathered in a tangy, creamy hollandaise sauce and served with a side of onion and dill cream.

Mediterranean Sizzle ($19.00):
With onion, zucchini, capsicum, garlic, chorizo, spicy napoletan sauce, eggs with toast

The Mediterranean Sizzle is Sidewalk's version of baked eggs and it was amazing. The napoletan sauce is smoothe, thick, and  flavoured with a strong hint of garlic and onion. It's both fragrant and spicy. Inside the pot you'll find chunks of chorizo, zucchini and capsicum strips, and two perfectly gooey eggs. It's hearty, filling and the three slices of crusty bread are perfect for mopping up the rest of the beautiful sauce.

For dessert, because no meal is complete without something sweet to end, there's French Toast!

French Toast ($14.00):
With crispy bacon, popcorn, salted caramel sauce, strawberries and mint

The slices of toast are golden, crispy edged with a custard flavour that wasn't too rich and sweetened by the salted caramel sauce, fresh strawberries, crunchy popcorn and fresh mint. Its flavours were quite light and it was a pleasant way to finish the meal.

If you're in the area, Sidewalk in Balmain is definitely worth checking out!

Hi there! My name is Anna. I'm nineteen, in my second year of uni (UNSW) and born in Sydney. This blog is about my gastronomic adventures in Australia and abroad. It all started when I got new camera (Samsung Ex1) and since then, I've been mainly taking photos of food. So, I decided to document everything on this blog.

I'm still learning to take nice pictures - my camera isn't exactly the greatest but it works.

Oh, and I think we should get this out of the way (just in case you decide to unfriend me) I'm not a fan of chocolate or coffee. (Yes you saw right).

Anyway, enough about me - thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy!
